Our Tree Nurseries
We manage two major tree nurseries.
At Broadley (near Diptford) and at Dartington are the nurseries that grow the bulk of our trees.
Our volunteers collect seed or cuttings in the late summer and autumn from local woodland and hedgerows which are then nurtured and germinated in seed trays and cold frames before planting out in special nursery beds.
The young trees are grown here for up to 3 years before they are ready to be lifted out and planted in our native woodland projects.
The whole process requires lots of effort from our staff and volunteers. The beds need regular weeding and watering in summer, digging over and renewing in winter. The work can be hard but is rewarding and enjoyable, amply fuelled by tea and cake.
Volunteers are always welcome to join our friendly teams.

Grid reference: SX 727 553.
Broadley Farm is one mile south of Diptford village which is best approached from Avonwick or Shorter Cross on the South Brent to Totnes (Old Plymouth) Road.
In the centre of Diptford drive downhill on the lane off the main route through the village between the Old Bakehouse, now a private cottage, on your left and what passes for a village ‘green’ on your right. A blue sign says ‘unsuitable for heavy lorries’. This is a long lane and over a mile down it you will pass cottages with bright green paintwork on the left and then you will reach a T junction with a sign to Broadley on the gate opposite.
Turn left then quickly next right up a short hill and the nursery is on the left at the brow of the hill.
There is parking on site.
