Wedlake lies in a remote part of West Dartmoor surrounded by the majestic Great Staple, Cox and Roos Tors. Cairns and hut circles abound nearby and continue over the hill to the famous Merrivale Stone Rows. There is a public footpath that passes by the edge of the planting site. This can be accessed from Higher Godsworthy (SX530769).
The planting site itself borders the open moor and follows the beautiful Colly Brook, a tributary of the Tavy, for a third of a kilometre. However, the scheme took great care not to cover areas of historic interest or habitats of high biological importance.
The planting of nearly 2000 trees in early 2008 added diversity to the established scrub and older trees that have managed to get away from the local sheep and cattle. Open areas within the planting of native species such as alder buckthorn will encourage warm glades for insects and butterflies alongside the stream and established valley mire habitat.
The scheme here is supported by Natural England through their Environmentally Sensitive Area scheme. Our thanks go to the landowner for actively pursuing native woodland regeneration in the area and involving Moor Trees in the development and implementation of this scheme.
