Sharpham Estate

The Sharpham Estate has a long history of landscape projects. The estate itself comprises 550 acres of sustainably farmed land following a three mile stretch of the River Dart.

Sharpham House dates back to 1770 and is set in a Capability Brown landscape that is the base for a diversity of projects of practical endeavours with spiritual enquiry. The Sharpham Trust, based on the Sharpham Estate, was founded in 1984 by Ruth and Maurice Ash to maintain, conserve and enhance the land, buildings, resources and bio-diversity of its estate for public benefit.

The estate is working with the Trust to help link its fragmented native woodlands. The planting of nearly 3000 trees in March and November of 2008 will link three isolated native woodlands and help to restore a vital native woodland corridor with larger woodland fragments along the majestic River Dart. Part of the planting site is dedicated to the memory of a previous tenant farmer on the estate and a pond and seating are planned for an area within the site.

The river here is tidal but the valley is still quite steep and incised and there are great views from the planting site and the national cycle route that passes close by. Permissive access will be allowed from the cycle path to the memorial area, and during planting days it will be extended to the rest of the planting site as well.
