HMP Dartmoor (Princetown)
2009 has seen the start of an exciting new woodlands, nurseries, research & education partnership with HMP Dartmoor at Princetown.
A 1 hectare woodland planting scheme is included in the project, which, whilst comparatively small in size, is huge in significance for two reasons - the high altitude location and its work with the offenders from within the prison.
Forming part of the wider OPEP project, we planted nearly 1,000 trees across the site, including Oak, Ash, Birch, Rowan, Hazel, Holly, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Willow, Beech, Wild Cherry, Field Maple and Alder.
Nearly all of the planting was carried out by offenders from the Resettlement Unit ('RSU'). This was a new skill taught to them, but one that was picked up very ably and effectively, with great results coming very quickly. Not only was this a new skill on offer, but of equal importance is the diversification of activities within the prison which also lead to new experiential leanring opportunities on 'live projects'.
