Why create a woodland with Moor Trees?
Moor Trees has been providing a dedicated service to support landowners with planning, designing and implementing a range of woodland creation or restoration projects on Dartmoor and surrounding areas for quarter of a century. We specialise in creating native woodland utilising trees grown in our two Community Tree Nurseries from seeds locally sourced.
To achieve our vision for Dartmoor we work with a wide range of landowners and community groups to increase the area of tree coverage by connecting up existing habitats, restoring existing woodland sites, creating brand new woodland or introducing more trees and shrubs into the farmed landscape.
Every winter we plant thousands of saplings to create more hectares of woodland on Dartmoor and the surrounding area. There are a range of different grants and support available locally to meet tree planting aspirations and we can support landowners with accessing some of these grants:

We select a diverse range of species for our woodland sites that can support a wide range of native flora and fauna above and below the ground to help boost biodiversity locally and also store carbon for generations to come.
Six steps to creating a woodland
1. Choosing the site - Moor Trees can help assess the suitability of a new woodland site. After an initial telephone call if it sounds like there is potential for woodland creation we will visit to carry out an initial assessment.
2. Having a clear vision - the landowners we have worked with have a range of ambitions and desires for why they want to create a woodland on their land. We can help you consider what needs to be achieved and how we can work together to make this happen.
3. Being part of the landscape - there is lots to consider when developing a new woodland. Taking note of what is around the planned site, a study of the wildlife and species the land already contains, assessing the benefits that a new woodland can bring to the landscape and any potential limitations is the important third step.
4. Designing and planning - as well as choosing what and where to plant, this stage includes important consultation with local experts and bodies to ensure that there are no unforeseen negative impacts of the scheme planned. This is an important stage of any application for grant funding and essential for ensuring the right decisions are being made for the land and habitat being created.
5. Choosing the method of establishment - where there is already existing trees and woodland overtime this habitat can expand naturally with the right protection from browsing mammals. Choosing where and how densely to plant trees across land area to speed up this process or create a more species rich woodland habitat to create greater resilience in the landscape is essential.
6. Making it happen - the practicalities and logistics for planning any new woodland creation scheme can be quite complicated. It is also important to consider through proper planning how to ensure the best possible conditions are in place for successful establishment of the young woodland. Moor Trees has a 95% survival rate of trees in the woodlands it helps to create - but it doesn't stop there - making sure there is a clear management plan for the ongoing care of the woodland is also really important.
