Moor Trees

Moretonhampstead

This tree nursery is high up on the allotments on the Chagford Road with views of the area and within easy walking distance of local shops, some of whom stock organic & local food. The soil is fine & dark from particles of granite. We focus our green fingers on growing acorns gathered from nearby Blackaton Woods and the valleys around Lustleigh into oak trees that will end up being replanted onto Dartmoor. Other allotment holders also grow trees for us from local seed. Oak trees are renowned for their hardiness and host more species of wildlife than any other tree on the moor.

We generally meet every third Sunday in the month, at 11am. Whatever the weather, rain or shine, we start our tree work with a cup of tea and a piece of delicious home-baked cake. There's plenty of space to sit out on the grass or chairs and the shed provides reading material or mulch depending on how you feel about old newspapers! In spite of these wonderful distractions we get lots of work done and over the past few years we have grown over 3000 trees.
